Environmental Monitoring & Assessment

Within the global regulatory environment, there is a requirement to report on the environmental impact of discharges from a nuclear site. CRA has international experience of designing and advising on such programmes, e.g. in Hong Kong, France and the USA, to regulators and local authorities, as well as nuclear plant operators. CRA can provide analyses of environmental effects and act as a ‘critical friend’.

Human exposure outside a nuclear site may include consumption of locally collected vegetables and seafood as well as occupational exposure due to handling contaminated sediments or due to the location of their homes. CRA can advise on identifying the most exposed people, including children, who will form the so called ‘Critical Group’ as recommended by the IAEA.

Our range of environmental support services include:

  • Assessment of environmental data in the context of scientific robustness to meet customer needs
  • Design of environmental monitoring programmes and assessments
  • Selecting the most appropriate sampling regimes for environmental analysis
  • Identifying key radionuclides and exposure pathways
  • Advice to regulators and industry on best practice relating to auditing procedures & evidence
  • ISO 14001 management system development

The CRA Environmental Management team has international experience in industrial environmental management - from direct operational activities to corporate policy - with particular knowledge of the oil and gas sector as well as the nuclear industry.

By making a careful assessment of emissions to air, water and waste, the team can assist clients in reviewing their environmental impacts and minimising environmental risk. With extensive practical knowledge of pollution control, monitoring and reporting, the team can advise on the selection of appropriate pollution and control measures, corporate reporting and legislative compliance.

CRA is, therefore, well placed to support clients for their sustainability initiatives and stakeholder assurance requirements.
